Child safety standards
Kindred is a private app for families. We have zero tolerance for child sexual abuse and exploitation (CSAE) and child sexual abuse material (CSAM). This page sets out our standards, how anyone can report a concern, and what we do when we receive one.
Our standards
The following is prohibited on Kindred and leads to immediate removal of the content and the account:
- Any child sexual abuse material (CSAM), including drawn, computer-generated or AI-generated imagery.
- Sexualising minors in any way, in text, photos, comments or messages.
- Grooming: contacting a minor to build trust for sexual purposes, or asking a minor for sexual content or to meet in person.
- Sextortion, trafficking, or any other exploitation of a minor.
- Sharing links to, or offering, any of the above.
How Kindred is designed to keep children safe
- Family trees are private. They are never public or searchable, and only people invited by a family member can see them. Kindred has no public profiles and no way to contact strangers.
- Children under 13 can only have an account with a parent’s approval, given from the parent’s own Kindred account. The parent chooses which families the child joins, can see that the account exists, receives copies of emails sent to the child, and can delete the child’s account at any time.
- Child accounts cannot add a phone or WhatsApp number, cannot receive text or WhatsApp messages, never receive marketing, and cannot sign in with Google or Apple.
- A child can only join family trees that a parent belongs to or that a parent invites them to.
- Everyone can block any other person, and blocked people can no longer reach them.
How to report a concern
- In the app: use Report in the ⋯ menu on any post, comment, message or person. Reports go straight to our safety team.
- By email: write to info@kindredplace.app with “Child safety” in the subject. You don’t need a Kindred account to report.
If a child is in immediate danger, contact your local police or emergency number first.
You can also report CSAM directly to the NCMEC CyberTipline (United States) or the Internet Watch Foundation (United Kingdom), or to the hotline in your country listed by INHOPE.
What we do when we receive a report
- We review child safety reports with the highest priority, normally within 24 hours.
- We remove CSAM and CSAE content and permanently disable the accounts involved.
- We report apparent CSAM to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and to the relevant regional and national authorities, as the law requires, and we preserve the information they need.
- We cooperate with law enforcement requests made through proper legal channels.
Compliance
Kindred complies with applicable child safety laws, including the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) for children under 13, and reports to regional and national authorities as required. How we handle children’s data is described in the Privacy Policy.
